这支来自挪威奥斯陆的乐队前身是由Pal Waaktaar和Magne Furuholmen组成的Bridges。在80年代初，随着Morten Harket的加入，才更名为a-ha。83年，他们加盟了WEA，并在两年后推出了单曲Take on Me，这首单曲不仅在英国取得了第二的成绩，同时在美国也取得了不俗的成绩。但这并不是他们的巅峰，仅隔了半年，他们的另一首单曲The Sun Always Shines on T.V.夺去了英国排行榜的冠军，凭借着这首单曲的成功，也保证了他们的专辑Hunting High and Low在销量上的成功。与此同时他们受到了更多评论家的关注，以及更多歌迷的拥护。


完成世界巡演之后，他们应邀为007系列影片The Living Daylights做配乐，之后发表了他们的第三张专辑Stay on These Roads，在这张专辑当中，被更多关注的是Blood That Moves the Body这首作品的歌词，当中描写了神风突击队（第二次世界大战末期的日本空军“敢死队”队员, 驾驶满载炸弹的飞机去撞击轰炸目标, 企图与之同归于尽）队员的自杀行为。

90年，他们发表了第四张专辑East of the Sun，West of the Moon。可由于当时曼彻斯特潮流（Manchester）的兴起，这张专辑并没有受到想象当中的关注。在93年发表了Memorial Beach之后，乐队暂时停滞了。在这期间，乐队灵魂人物Waaktaar与他的另一支乐队Savoy合作，并发表了专辑Mary Is Coming。

7年后的2000年他们又重新聚到了一起，并在这两年间发表了Minor Earth Major Sky以及Lifelines。
